Hostilities between groups on Britain’s extreme right have taken a bizarre turn with Paul Golding, leader of Britain First, launching into a furious attack on Homeland Party boss Kenny Smith, accusing him of being a nazi with a swastika tattoo on his chest and challenging him to show his chest and prove it’s not true.

Openly nazi

This latest spat commenced with Golding going online yesterday to issue a “warning to all patriots”. It said:

“You may have seen a group called the ‘Homeland Party’.

“This group is openly fascist and neo-Nazi.

“Their leader, Kenny Smith, has a huge swastika tattoo on his chest and has a firearms conviction.

“Most of their regional organisers have been snapped doing Nazi salutes or posting material about Hitler and Oswald Mosley.

“You have been warned”.

Golding has been spooked by the number of members who have defected from Britain First to the ‘respectable nationalism’ of Smith’s Homeland Party in recent months. One of the most notable was Nick Scanlon, BF’s candidate for London mayor last year.

So, like Patriotic Alternative’s Mark Collett a fortnight ago, Golding is attempting to undermine Smith’s claim that his is a more acceptable brand of far-right politics.

Open or closet nazis?

Golding can’t quite seem to make up his mind whether Homeland are ‘openly’ nazi, or closet nazis hiding behind a veneer of respectability. Both accusations feature in his attack.

Collett, too, has been increasingly concerned at losing members to Homeland, and he too has recently raised the swastika tattoo claim, though it has been common knowledge on the far right for years.

He went online, two weeks ago, to denounce Smith as a “Morbidly obese slob with a giant swastika and eagle on his chest who boasts that he used to be an organiser for Combat 18…”. But he went further and pointed the finger at Smith as a state asset. You can read about that here: PA leader Collett in desperate ‘state asset’ attack on Homeland Party boss.

So far, Smith has declined to deny the claim, but others have come forward to confirm that they have seen the tattoo in question.

Show us your chest

However, not content with his online post Golding, sounding rather the worse for wear, followed up with a phone call to Kenny Smith titled ‘BEHOLD, THE LEADER OF THE ‘HOMELAND PARTY’!.’ and challenging him to a meeting where Smith could “show the camera your chest and we can move on with our lives. Job done…

“And obviously if it’s lies, I’ll apologise, and we’ll delete the post and that’s the end of it”

Smith responded by telling Golding “You are one of the most crooked guys on the right” and warning him to, “Just remember, what goes around comes around”.

You can hear the whole exchange in this post on X: Behold, The Leader Of The ‘Homeland Party’!

The row has drawn out the worst in some Homeland supporters who, despite their recently assumed ‘respectable credentials’, just can’t help themselves and accuse Golding of being in the pay of ‘the Jews’.

Golding uses the opportunity to attack another leading Homeland member Steve Laws, who is also now a proponent of ‘respectable nationalism’. Golding has posted a screenshot of an earlier Laws online post showing a picture of Oswald Mosley with the words: “There is an alternative”.

Laws respond with a barrage of allegations against Golding, whom he describes as a liar and grifter and ‘’Not a man to be trusted, folks”.

In the current climate, these are not the most important groups or individuals on Britain’s far right, but antifascists can be excused for just sitting back and enjoying this while it lasts.

To investigate fascists takes real courage and unusual commitment. The government, police, mainstream media occasionally take a look, but in the UK only Searchlight have kept at it, relentlessly and admirably, regardless of threat or obstacle. It’s journalism that matters. A rare thing.

In the campaign against the National Front, Searchlight provided a rich and utterly reliable basis for much ANL propaganda – particularly with reference to the two leading NF figures, John Tyndall and Martin Webster. The appearance of Tyndall in full nazi uniform, drawn from the archives of Searchlight, was a key part of ANL propaganda, coupled with deeply damaging nazi quotes from Webster.

British Jews have been persecuted over the centuries; British blacks since the Windrush generation of the 1950s; British Muslims, especially after the Islamist 9/11 and then 7/7 terrorist attacks in New York 2001 and London 2005. But until the last few years there has not been a simultaneous threat against all three British communities of Jewish, Black and Muslim Britons – meaning the need for Searchlight has never been greater.

Searchlight’s voice is more important than ever, and I am delighted that it will now be available to a wider audience than ever before in its new incarnation online. Searchlight has been extremely helpful over the years in exposing the far right, corruption, criminality and the murky links between organised crime and powerful interests in the UK and abroad. I wish Searchlight the very best.

The essence of trade unionism is solidarity, fairness and equality – for all workers – from all backgrounds. That’s why our fight against the far-right has always been part of our movement’s DNA. Searchlight is an incredibly important resource for trade unions and members to understand the contemporary tactics of far-right activity. Their work and intelligence gathering over the years have been incredibly insightful for the work we do, and how we fight the scourge of fascism.
