Calvin Robinson – sacked again

Britain’s ‘batshit preacher’, Calvin Robinson, who fled to the US last year ‘in fear of his life’ has been sacked by his second American church – after just one day.

Robinson left the ‘Satanic’ UK last August claiming he feared he would either be murdered by Muslims or arrested by the Labour government, and found a new Anglican Catholic Church parish in Grand Rapids, West Michigan, where his new flock seemed to believe he had been sent to them by God.

But, what God giveth, God taketh away, and he was sacked by the Anglican Catholic Church in January after making a nazi salute at a right wing rally in Washington. They also accused him of “using rhetoric that was clearly and intentionally anti-Semitic”.

Bizarrely, despite having decamped to the US, Robinson remained UKIP’s Lead Spokesman on Everything, though lately he has been stripping all UKIP references from his social media accounts.

After a while in the wilderness – and a predictable round of crowdfunding – a rather cocky cleric went online last week to announce that another church, the Reformed Episcopalian and Anglican Church in North America, had given him a license to practise as a priest and that his Grand Rapids parish was following him into the REC fold.

Alas, it was not to be. Just a day after granting him the licensure, REC Bishop Ray Sutton withdrew it. It appears that other bishops in the church were far from happy with the decision which took them by surprise, and they made forceful representations to the reputedly right-wing Bishop Sutton.

Bishop Sutton was also aided no doubt, by the verdict of his own archbishop that Robinson was “Un-Anglican and ungovernable”.

Bishop Sutton prayed, reflected, then booted ‘batshit’ out.

Robinson immediately posted that “Perhaps God is sending me a message”. Yes, indeed.

He has since closed down his account on X/Twitter and vanished. Fasting in the desert, no doubt.

Where that leaves his poor flock, remains to be seen.

We will update this story as more details emerge.

The essence of trade unionism is solidarity, fairness and equality – for all workers – from all backgrounds. That’s why our fight against the far-right has always been part of our movement’s DNA. Searchlight is an incredibly important resource for trade unions and members to understand the contemporary tactics of far-right activity. Their work and intelligence gathering over the years have been incredibly insightful for the work we do, and how we fight the scourge of fascism.

British Jews have been persecuted over the centuries; British blacks since the Windrush generation of the 1950s; British Muslims, especially after the Islamist 9/11 and then 7/7 terrorist attacks in New York 2001 and London 2005. But until the last few years there has not been a simultaneous threat against all three British communities of Jewish, Black and Muslim Britons – meaning the need for Searchlight has never been greater.

To investigate fascists takes real courage and unusual commitment. The government, police, mainstream media occasionally take a look, but in the UK only Searchlight have kept at it, relentlessly and admirably, regardless of threat or obstacle. It’s journalism that matters. A rare thing.

Searchlight’s voice is more important than ever, and I am delighted that it will now be available to a wider audience than ever before in its new incarnation online. Searchlight has been extremely helpful over the years in exposing the far right, corruption, criminality and the murky links between organised crime and powerful interests in the UK and abroad. I wish Searchlight the very best.

In the campaign against the National Front, Searchlight provided a rich and utterly reliable basis for much ANL propaganda – particularly with reference to the two leading NF figures, John Tyndall and Martin Webster. The appearance of Tyndall in full nazi uniform, drawn from the archives of Searchlight, was a key part of ANL propaganda, coupled with deeply damaging nazi quotes from Webster.
