Embarrassingly low turnout for Harry Hilden’s latest demonstration

Another embarrassing flop for Kent’s “Fash Harry” Hilden. His march on the Napier Barracks asylum centre in Folkestone on Saturday was very poorly attended, with only around thirty five present.

Cake not Hate

They were outnumbered three-to-one by counter-protesters from Folkestone Action Network, who staged a “Cake not Hate” event (to raise money for the Napier Friends charity) outside the asylum centre, which is actually due to close for good in a matter of weeks.

Being heavily eclipsed by a bake sale is surely a clear sign that Hilden’s bandwagon is now rapidly losing momentum.

As an added bonus for those unfortunate enough to be within earshot, Jodie Scott / Goodban (“Missus Kent”) caterwauled her way through her new Christmas single during the protest.

The march was led by a white Tesla car with a hideous, foul-mouthed, migraine-inducing all-over “Stop the Boats” vinyl-wrap decoration.

Shaun Chaney’s tastefully done out Tesla at the head of Saturday’s Napier Barracks demonstration.

The same vehicle was present in Faversham on the most recent anti-migrant march there, on 15 November.

The owner of this monstrosity operates an incontinent Facebook account under the name “Stoppa Fukinboats”.

He is Shaun Chaney, from Ashford. Judging by his house and car, he’s not short of a bob or two. He appears to make his money from operating tow-truck and body-shop services.

He ran Ashford Recovery Service Ltd from 2019 until it was dissolved in 2020.

He then ran Breakdown Recovery Kent Ltd from 2021 until it was dissolved in 2024. He also appears to have traded as “T and D Motors Kent”.

And, like most of Hilden’s local far-right luminaries, Mr Chaney brings his own criminal record to the proceedings.

In June 1987, he was convicted of possessing offensive weapons, namely a sheath knife and a hammer.

And just to prove that anyone is welcome at these events, the fascists of the British Democrats turned up handing out their leaflets.

UKIP have now called a demonstration outside the Golden Lion pub in nearby Dover on Saturday 13 December, promising that leader Nick Tenconi will be attending.

But, after two no-shows in the area in recent months don’t be at all surprised if ‘TACO’ Tenconi is nowhere to be seen on the day.

British Jews have been persecuted over the centuries; British blacks since the Windrush generation of the 1950s; British Muslims, especially after the Islamist 9/11 and then 7/7 terrorist attacks in New York 2001 and London 2005. But until the last few years there has not been a simultaneous threat against all three British communities of Jewish, Black and Muslim Britons – meaning the need for Searchlight has never been greater.

The essence of trade unionism is solidarity, fairness and equality – for all workers – from all backgrounds. That’s why our fight against the far-right has always been part of our movement’s DNA. Searchlight is an incredibly important resource for trade unions and members to understand the contemporary tactics of far-right activity. Their work and intelligence gathering over the years have been incredibly insightful for the work we do, and how we fight the scourge of fascism.

In the campaign against the National Front, Searchlight provided a rich and utterly reliable basis for much ANL propaganda – particularly with reference to the two leading NF figures, John Tyndall and Martin Webster. The appearance of Tyndall in full nazi uniform, drawn from the archives of Searchlight, was a key part of ANL propaganda, coupled with deeply damaging nazi quotes from Webster.

Searchlight’s voice is more important than ever, and I am delighted that it will now be available to a wider audience than ever before in its new incarnation online. Searchlight has been extremely helpful over the years in exposing the far right, corruption, criminality and the murky links between organised crime and powerful interests in the UK and abroad. I wish Searchlight the very best.

To investigate fascists takes real courage and unusual commitment. The government, police, mainstream media occasionally take a look, but in the UK only Searchlight have kept at it, relentlessly and admirably, regardless of threat or obstacle. It’s journalism that matters. A rare thing.
