Croydon’s Grand Sapphire Hotel – Reform turned away

’Tis the season to be jolly – unless you’re Reform UK’s Deputy leader Richard Tice, who recently discovered that Croydon’s Grand Sapphire Hotel has more spine than his party’s vetting committee.

The venue cancelled Reform’s Christmas knees‑up after locals pointed out that “festive cheer” doesn’t usually involve Lee Anderson shouting about migrants over turkey and stuffing.

Cue outrage from Tice, who thundered that Britain was turning into North Korea; this from a man whose party until recently harboured its own Russian agent, and may yet discover more.

‘Cancel culture’

He accused the hotel of “caving in to bullies,” which, again, is rich coming from a man whose election slogan might as well be All I want for Christmas is a grievance.”

Anderson, meanwhile, declared this was yet another example of “cancel culture”.

And he’s quite right; nothing says “cancelled” like being denied your £350-a-head prawn cocktail.

Supporters silenced

London Assembly member for Havering and Redbridge, Keith Prince, drafted in to add gravitas (honest!) insisted Reform supporters were being silenced. Croydon residents, however, seemed more concerned about far-right flatulence.

The hotel’s owner, Suleman Raza, explained that he had a duty to protect staff and guests. And he was also almost certainly influenced by the outraged reaction of the local Muslim community.

Reform UK immediately threatened legal action, presumably hoping to sue their way into a Christmas buffet. Lawyers are bracing themselves for the world’s first writ demanding access to pigs in blankets.

Celebration

But local anti-racist campaigners celebrated the cancellation, noting that Croydon welcomes refugees but not racists.

Tice responded by promising Reform would find another venue. Suggestions so far include a Wetherspoons car park, a disused branch of Debenhams, or possibly Lee Anderson’s shed.

White Xmas

The incident neatly sums up Reform’s year: big talk, bigger outrage, but no pudding. As one Croydon resident put it on social media: “If they want a white Christmas, they can stay at home and shout at the snow.”

Reform? Bah, Humbug!

The essence of trade unionism is solidarity, fairness and equality – for all workers – from all backgrounds. That’s why our fight against the far-right has always been part of our movement’s DNA. Searchlight is an incredibly important resource for trade unions and members to understand the contemporary tactics of far-right activity. Their work and intelligence gathering over the years have been incredibly insightful for the work we do, and how we fight the scourge of fascism.

In the campaign against the National Front, Searchlight provided a rich and utterly reliable basis for much ANL propaganda – particularly with reference to the two leading NF figures, John Tyndall and Martin Webster. The appearance of Tyndall in full nazi uniform, drawn from the archives of Searchlight, was a key part of ANL propaganda, coupled with deeply damaging nazi quotes from Webster.

To investigate fascists takes real courage and unusual commitment. The government, police, mainstream media occasionally take a look, but in the UK only Searchlight have kept at it, relentlessly and admirably, regardless of threat or obstacle. It’s journalism that matters. A rare thing.

British Jews have been persecuted over the centuries; British blacks since the Windrush generation of the 1950s; British Muslims, especially after the Islamist 9/11 and then 7/7 terrorist attacks in New York 2001 and London 2005. But until the last few years there has not been a simultaneous threat against all three British communities of Jewish, Black and Muslim Britons – meaning the need for Searchlight has never been greater.

Searchlight’s voice is more important than ever, and I am delighted that it will now be available to a wider audience than ever before in its new incarnation online. Searchlight has been extremely helpful over the years in exposing the far right, corruption, criminality and the murky links between organised crime and powerful interests in the UK and abroad. I wish Searchlight the very best.
