A white supremacist who has joined Restore Britain and been pictured alongside the party founder Rupert Lowe today sent birthday greetings to Adolf Hitler on his Telegram channel.

Chris Mitchell, the former East of England organiser for the neo-Nazi group Patriotic Alternative (PA) and a self-described “Nazi-Buddhist”, posted his message on 20 April, the anniversary of Hitler’s birth in 1889.

Blessed day

“Happy 420 guys. Happy birthday Unc,” Mitchell wrote, signing off with a prayer-hands emoji and a message wishing his followers “a blessed day”.

The post was visible to the roughly 160 members of his channel, which Mitchell renamed the Restore Britain War Room.

The significance of the date will have been lost on nobody in Mitchell’s audience. Neo-nazi and white supremacist groups routinely stage events around the anniversary of Hitler’s April 20th birthday.

Last year, British Movement members in Manchester came under police investigation after holding a birthday celebration in a pub – complete with a swastika birthday cake.

The “420” reference is a well-established neo-Nazi numerical code for the date, used online to invoke Hitler’s birthday while maintaining a veneer of plausible deniability. “Unc” – short for “uncle” – is a common white nationalist term of affection for Hitler.

White genocide

Mitchell makes no effort to conceal his ideology. He has publicly posted the “14 words” – the most widely used white supremacist slogan in the world – declared that diversity means “white genocide”, and claimed that “Jewish control over our people WILL be coming to an end.”

Yet he has also become a visible presence within Restore Britain.

Since joining Great Yarmouth First, the movement’s flagship local organisation, last November, Mitchell has been actively recruiting fellow ethno-nationalists.

He posed for a selfie with Lowe and posted it publicly on both Facebook and Telegram.

According to Mitchell, when he asked Lowe whether his extreme nationalist views would be a problem, Lowe told him it was a matter of “free speech.”

Lowe has not disputed the account.

As we have already reported, Lowe’s Restore has become a major pole of attraction for British nazis.

Steve Laws and other former Homeland Party members have joined up, and Patriotic Alternative leader Mark Collett has urged PA members to join too, calling Lowe “the greatest sitting MP since World War Two, including Enoch Powell.”

The essence of trade unionism is solidarity, fairness and equality – for all workers – from all backgrounds. That’s why our fight against the far-right has always been part of our movement’s DNA. Searchlight is an incredibly important resource for trade unions and members to understand the contemporary tactics of far-right activity. Their work and intelligence gathering over the years have been incredibly insightful for the work we do, and how we fight the scourge of fascism.

In the campaign against the National Front, Searchlight provided a rich and utterly reliable basis for much ANL propaganda – particularly with reference to the two leading NF figures, John Tyndall and Martin Webster. The appearance of Tyndall in full nazi uniform, drawn from the archives of Searchlight, was a key part of ANL propaganda, coupled with deeply damaging nazi quotes from Webster.

To investigate fascists takes real courage and unusual commitment. The government, police, mainstream media occasionally take a look, but in the UK only Searchlight have kept at it, relentlessly and admirably, regardless of threat or obstacle. It’s journalism that matters. A rare thing.

Searchlight’s voice is more important than ever, and I am delighted that it will now be available to a wider audience than ever before in its new incarnation online. Searchlight has been extremely helpful over the years in exposing the far right, corruption, criminality and the murky links between organised crime and powerful interests in the UK and abroad. I wish Searchlight the very best.

British Jews have been persecuted over the centuries; British blacks since the Windrush generation of the 1950s; British Muslims, especially after the Islamist 9/11 and then 7/7 terrorist attacks in New York 2001 and London 2005. But until the last few years there has not been a simultaneous threat against all three British communities of Jewish, Black and Muslim Britons – meaning the need for Searchlight has never been greater.
