A serving US Army infantryman has been charged with making terrorist threats after allegedly telling a Discord chat group that he intended to attack a synagogue and murder every Jewish worshipper inside.

Jakob Marcoulier, 22, a ‘Specalist soldier’ assigned to the 10th Mountain Division’s 3rd Brigade at Fort Polk, Louisiana, was indicted on 23 April on a charge of transmitting threats in interstate commerce.

The FBI obtained audio recordings from Discord servers in which Marcoulier allegedly laid out his plans in explicit operational detail.

Kill every single Jew

According to an FBI affidavit, Marcoulier told other users that after his current deployment he intended to “walk into a synagogue with my AK, with a 75-round drum mag, and all of my extra mags, with my level four plates, and my haka helmet that’s three plus, and I am going to kill every single Jew.”

He said he would carry out the attack “for the f***ing cause” and added: “You’ll see me in the news. I promise you.”

Tip-off from member of public

Investigators linked the Discord account, operating under the username “el.bostino”, to Marcoulier after a member of the public flagged the threats to the FBI’s New Orleans field office in February.

“I’ll still kill these mother****ers in order to make sure the white youth is f***ing secured,” he reportedly said.

He joined the Army in July 2023 and completed one operational tour in Europe before the charges were filed.

Federal prosecutors sought pre-trial detention on the grounds that he posed a flight risk, claiming he had spoken of deploying overseas again, though Army officials confirmed his unit has no upcoming deployments.

Political persecution

The case lands at an awkward moment for the Pentagon.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has signalled his intention to wind down the counter-extremism initiatives introduced after the January 2021 Capitol riot, arguing that screening troops for far-right sympathies amounts to political persecution.

Marcoulier, if convicted, faces up to five years in federal prison.

The essence of trade unionism is solidarity, fairness and equality – for all workers – from all backgrounds. That’s why our fight against the far-right has always been part of our movement’s DNA. Searchlight is an incredibly important resource for trade unions and members to understand the contemporary tactics of far-right activity. Their work and intelligence gathering over the years have been incredibly insightful for the work we do, and how we fight the scourge of fascism.

British Jews have been persecuted over the centuries; British blacks since the Windrush generation of the 1950s; British Muslims, especially after the Islamist 9/11 and then 7/7 terrorist attacks in New York 2001 and London 2005. But until the last few years there has not been a simultaneous threat against all three British communities of Jewish, Black and Muslim Britons – meaning the need for Searchlight has never been greater.

Searchlight’s voice is more important than ever, and I am delighted that it will now be available to a wider audience than ever before in its new incarnation online. Searchlight has been extremely helpful over the years in exposing the far right, corruption, criminality and the murky links between organised crime and powerful interests in the UK and abroad. I wish Searchlight the very best.

To investigate fascists takes real courage and unusual commitment. The government, police, mainstream media occasionally take a look, but in the UK only Searchlight have kept at it, relentlessly and admirably, regardless of threat or obstacle. It’s journalism that matters. A rare thing.

In the campaign against the National Front, Searchlight provided a rich and utterly reliable basis for much ANL propaganda – particularly with reference to the two leading NF figures, John Tyndall and Martin Webster. The appearance of Tyndall in full nazi uniform, drawn from the archives of Searchlight, was a key part of ANL propaganda, coupled with deeply damaging nazi quotes from Webster.
