Amid all the excitement around the walkout at County Hall in Maidstone last Thursday,it was barely noticed that among those exiting the chamber was a councillor belonging to a new party with the eccentric name of Better Way Of.

This was none other than Cllr Amelia Randall, the wacko psychic / life-coach who is one of the two Kent County Council members for Birchington and Rural Division, in Thanet.

Nick Tenconi welcomes defector Amelia Randall from reform UK

She was elected as a Reform UK candidate in May 2025 but defected to UKIP in September 2025.

Then, on 15 March, she announced on social media that she has now defected again – to her own newly-founded party (of which she is currently the sole member), Better Way Of.

Randall stated: “I started planning my party many years ago, but I decided I needed to get involved within politics first. What I have learned is that politics is like a school playground and that right now so many leaders are either becoming extreme or are wishy washy…

“We are neither Left nor Right. I believe in patriotism but am also humanitarian and I know many people who feel the same.”

It’s hard to believe that Randall has any sort of long-range master-plan but, as she has pointed out, her handle on X / Twitter has been “@BetterWayOf” for some time – so who knows?

Ineluctable destiny

Perhaps the tarot cards or her spirit guide told her years ago that leading her own nano-party was her ineluctable destiny.

She told KentOnline that “she is prepared to stand by the roadside with a sandwich board to advertise her party”.

In the meantime, Better Way Of does have a website. This is an amateurish mess with a lurid colour scheme incorporating various shades of fuchsia (or is it lilac?) that no-one would want on their walls, AI-generated images and a bewildering muddle of “core anchors”, “Pillars”, “values”, “high priority issues” and policies.

The headline policies are: a “County Baron Programme” (for “Billionaire Barons” – whatever they are); a scheme for council-provided mortgages; and the legalisation of cannabis.

“Become a member today”, proclaims the website – although the application form isn’t actually ready yet.

When it is, there will apparently be five different levels of membership, with a sliding scale of benefits – although all members will get a car-sticker as standard.

Private life

It’s not clear how this latest development will affect Randall’s private life. She and Staffordshire UKIP activist Terry Dryhurst (alias “Tezza Dee”) have been officially going steady since 16 January 2026 (according to their respective Facebook pages).

This effectively put paid to the competition between her and Francess Kray for the affections of party leader Nick Tenconi, of whom both women appeared enamoured.

This, as we have reported earlier, led to some eye-water exchanges between the two.

Bad mouthing

During the supposed shutdown of Dover on 24 January 2026, the loved-up pair of Randall and Dryhurst featured in a YouTube livestream, strolling arm-in-arm around Dover Marina while Dryhurst bad-mouthed Danny Tommo and Ryan Bridge.

Dryhurst, seven years Randall’s senior, is a sometime publican and parish councillor – and received the grand total of five votes when he stood for UKIP at a Cannock Chase District Council by-election in August 2025.

EDL leader

Piping up in support of Randall in the comments below a story about her defection on the Isle of Thanet News website is none other than Steve Lewis of Ramsgate.

As previously noted, Steven Alexander Lewis, convicted of burglary in 1996, was a leading member of the English Defence League and prominent in Britain First’s tight-knit “Kent Battalion” until he fell out with the BF leadership.

More recently he has contributed to one of the anti-Semitic threads on leading local activist Harry Hilden’s Facebook page.

In the campaign against the National Front, Searchlight provided a rich and utterly reliable basis for much ANL propaganda – particularly with reference to the two leading NF figures, John Tyndall and Martin Webster. The appearance of Tyndall in full nazi uniform, drawn from the archives of Searchlight, was a key part of ANL propaganda, coupled with deeply damaging nazi quotes from Webster.

British Jews have been persecuted over the centuries; British blacks since the Windrush generation of the 1950s; British Muslims, especially after the Islamist 9/11 and then 7/7 terrorist attacks in New York 2001 and London 2005. But until the last few years there has not been a simultaneous threat against all three British communities of Jewish, Black and Muslim Britons – meaning the need for Searchlight has never been greater.

Searchlight’s voice is more important than ever, and I am delighted that it will now be available to a wider audience than ever before in its new incarnation online. Searchlight has been extremely helpful over the years in exposing the far right, corruption, criminality and the murky links between organised crime and powerful interests in the UK and abroad. I wish Searchlight the very best.

The essence of trade unionism is solidarity, fairness and equality – for all workers – from all backgrounds. That’s why our fight against the far-right has always been part of our movement’s DNA. Searchlight is an incredibly important resource for trade unions and members to understand the contemporary tactics of far-right activity. Their work and intelligence gathering over the years have been incredibly insightful for the work we do, and how we fight the scourge of fascism.

To investigate fascists takes real courage and unusual commitment. The government, police, mainstream media occasionally take a look, but in the UK only Searchlight have kept at it, relentlessly and admirably, regardless of threat or obstacle. It’s journalism that matters. A rare thing.
