If you thought the ‘Batshit Preacher’ Calvin Robinson took the prize for most brazen fundraising grifts, you’d be wrong. He’s just been overtaken, in spectacular fashion, by Ben Walker, Chairman of UKIP.

Walker has just launched a crowd funding appeal to raise £50,000 for “UKIP’s Border Protection Mission” to “secure our borders and protect our people”.

And he makes the extraordinary claim that UKIP has already launched one “operation” in co-operation with the French police, to stop small boats crossing the channel.

The appeal says: “In light of the ongoing invasion of Britain, UKIP has conducted its first operation in the North of France, collaborating with the French police to locate and stop boats from crossing the Channel.

“We urgently need your support to continue this mission and ensure the safety of our communities.

“Your generosity will enable us to maintain designated teams on rotas in the North of France, working tirelessly to prevent the dangerous and illegal crossing of our borders”.

Gang of goons

UKIP’s “first operation”, as Walker calls it, involved UKIP Leader Nick Tenconi and a gang of goons turning up in Calais a couple of days earlier to harass refugees and NGO workers.

Dressed in black with black baseball caps, Tenconi’s heavies arrived in three vehicles and entered one of the largest informal living sites of refugees in Calais.

Hurling abuse

Wearing black leather gloves and wielding a megaphone, Tenconi hurled abuse at refugees, declaring that “Northern France is now British territory!  You’re not coming, you like that?”

“Fuck you! Fuck you! That’s what I say.”

However, the reaction he was hoping to provoke did not come, and after about an hour of shouting abuse they turned and left.

‘TACO’ Tenconi

In fact, given ‘TACO’ Tenconi’s previous performances when confronted with any serious opposition (he just legs it) they were probably quietly praying that those they were abusing would not react anyway.

So this is what Walker’s crowd funder is intended to finance. Gangs of thugs buying day returns on the ferry to shout abuse and film themselves in the process.

However, anyone who is still thinking of chipping in to Walker’s appeal would do well to ponder the fact that – despite his claim that they were co-operating with the French police – there was not a single French police officer in evidence.

As usual, this was just Tenconi and a gang of UKIP scumbags trying to provoke trouble.

At the time of writing, the appeal has raised £10…

To investigate fascists takes real courage and unusual commitment. The government, police, mainstream media occasionally take a look, but in the UK only Searchlight have kept at it, relentlessly and admirably, regardless of threat or obstacle. It’s journalism that matters. A rare thing.

Searchlight’s voice is more important than ever, and I am delighted that it will now be available to a wider audience than ever before in its new incarnation online. Searchlight has been extremely helpful over the years in exposing the far right, corruption, criminality and the murky links between organised crime and powerful interests in the UK and abroad. I wish Searchlight the very best.

In the campaign against the National Front, Searchlight provided a rich and utterly reliable basis for much ANL propaganda – particularly with reference to the two leading NF figures, John Tyndall and Martin Webster. The appearance of Tyndall in full nazi uniform, drawn from the archives of Searchlight, was a key part of ANL propaganda, coupled with deeply damaging nazi quotes from Webster.

British Jews have been persecuted over the centuries; British blacks since the Windrush generation of the 1950s; British Muslims, especially after the Islamist 9/11 and then 7/7 terrorist attacks in New York 2001 and London 2005. But until the last few years there has not been a simultaneous threat against all three British communities of Jewish, Black and Muslim Britons – meaning the need for Searchlight has never been greater.

The essence of trade unionism is solidarity, fairness and equality – for all workers – from all backgrounds. That’s why our fight against the far-right has always been part of our movement’s DNA. Searchlight is an incredibly important resource for trade unions and members to understand the contemporary tactics of far-right activity. Their work and intelligence gathering over the years have been incredibly insightful for the work we do, and how we fight the scourge of fascism.
